Home Malian Drums

What is this about?

What is special about malian djembes ?

These malian djembes tend to provide much richer and thicker tones than many of the other djembes originating from West Africa. Essentially this is a product of the extremely large sized heads and extremely high quality thick wood found in these models, a difficult to find asset these days among exported djembes. These large models provide warm tones, cracking slaps and enough bass to rattle the floors. Many Malians djembes are said to produce a longer sustain when hit, in effect making the drum sing as opposed to crack. All of these drums are made of lengue wood and use the finest quality rope and skin available in Bamako.

Where do these particular drums come from in Mali?

The actual raw wood from these drums comes primarilty from the western region of Mali, not far from the border of Guinea. The actual drums have been carved in Bamako (the capital) by Yacoub Kone, who is well known through Bamako for his talent and expertise. He is responsible for a large portion of the Malian drums that make it to the US.

Who are you ?

My name is Erich Huffaker and i'm originally from Riverside, CA. I've was living in Bamako Mali for the past few years and am currently back in California. I study djembe in Bamako and count among my friends many of the people who have produced these drums. I also produce music of my own (not traditional malian by any means) which you can check out and listen to for free

Why should i buy these drums from you?

Even though this is a small time endeavor, in Mali every little bit helps. I try to work with good people and make every effort possible to pay 25% more than the going rate for all costs necessary in the making of these drums. The prices for the drums reflect the fact that this is not at all a large commercial endeavor, yet you will still be able to get high quality without the high price. If all thats not enough, i'm giving 10% of the proceeds back to the people who helped me get the drums made.
